Life skills teach your child how to handle basic life tasks for themselves. Their growing independence and the desire to learn skills at this age makes it an ideal time to begin teaching basic life skills. Starting early gives the child plenty of time to practice before they need to apply the skills at an older age. Life skills activities are well suited to teach in a preschool or home daycare environment and are an ideal skill set to teach to children early.
At Lilybug Learning these skills are taught through everyday activities by providing structure and guidance while allowing the child to do these things on their own. Some of the important skills to be learned for everyday life taught at Lilybug Learning include:
- Everyday Manners: Basic manners like "please and thank you", "may I" and "you're welcome" are essential parts of good social interactions with adults and other children.
- Positive Behaviors: Becoming self aware and being able to self-regulate behavior contributes positively to your child's capacity for cooperation, teamwork, sharing and making good choices.
- Social Responsibility: Learning about recycling, the environment/animals, community neighborhood and being a good friend teaches your child about the world and their role as a good citizen.
- Personal Responsibilities: Basic chores such as cleaning up after themselves, dressing, toilet training and personal hygiene teach children indepence and resonsibility.
- Safety: Situations: Learning about safety - home, fire, kitchen, food, police, 911 and stranger danger - help your child stay safe and protected from harm.
- Personal Information: Knowing their full name, parents full names, home phone number and other personal information can help your child be safe in emergency situations.
Whenever appropriate field trips or guest presenters, such as police officers or firemen, will be used to assist in teaching your child specific life skills.
